Century old terrace home transformed to modern wonder
On the iconic South Terrace Strip in Fremantle, Swell Homes helped the metamorphosis of a 100 year old heritage terrace house into a smart and spacious modern home.
Working with award winning Fremantle practice, Phil Stejeskal Architects, Swell Homes transformed the vision for this extremely narrow block into reality – overcoming challenges posed by the innovative design and heritage structure along the way.
Adaptive reuse of the older property saw the original kitchen hearth converted to being a shower stall, and a kitchen created where the former living room stood, in the new heart of the home.
New polished concrete flooring in the living zones offsets the original polished jarrah of the kitchen and downstairs bedrooms. Pocket courtyards are overlooked by outsized louvre window to create cross ventilation through the home.
Creation of extra space and utility in a tight footprint saw some innovations in design. The new 3 storey garage structure includes a guest bedroom and ensuite on the middle floor. Topping it off, a roof top garden enjoys views over the colourful streetlife of the harbour city. Light funnels ensure that natural sunlight extends to ground floor living areas of the home.
The now 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom home is packed with complex architectural details and finished with custom cabinetry to give the home a 21st century burst of life.
