White Gum Valley Eco Home
Shadowy situation solved by Swell
This new double storey, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home was designed by Ambient Home Designs and completed by Swell Homes in 2015. In White Gum Valley, the centrally located home only minutes from the heart of Fremantle, has been created for a growing young family.
The cottage sized 301sqm lot, which had been subdivided from its neighbour, offered up a solar design challenge due to overshadowing from the taller existing home next door. With ever increasing urban density, maintaining natural light into properties often needs a clever design solution.
Swell Homes and Ambient Home Designs rose to the challenge, creating a weatherboard-clad, two storey home with polished concrete floors, a recycled brick feature wall and a central courtyard. The courtyard, on the northern side of the property, acts as a heat sink.
Large south-facing windows to the kitchen allow the winter sun to be absorbed by the brick wall and concrete floors. The two surfaces work together to trap warmth, while a hidden convection wall detail helps to miminise the heat loading of the abundant wall insulation in summer.
Design features of the home include an upper storey parents’ retreat with ensuite, two living areas and a modern kitchen with an industrial feel.
